For this lockdown-friendly album, I asked some of the Bay Area's finest experimental and improvising musicians to record some of their solo playing at home and send me the result for use as electroacoustic source material. These contributions, seared, scored, scalded and etched, broken into shards and crumbs, then reassembled into new twisted shapes, are what you hear on this album. No other sound sources were used.

All proceeds from this album will be donated to the Bay Area Safety Net, a non-profit designed to help support artists in the Bay Area during the COVID-19 crisis.

The Bay Area Safety Net (medium.com/@safetynet/the-safety-net-fund-20040273d291) offers grants to artists that typically make their living offline at events & retail establishments that have been cancelled or closed due to coronavirus. This includes performing artists, musicians, visual artists, event producers, and other types of creators. As the world around us descends into bedlam, we turn towards each other to find hope, support, and community.

Myles Boisen (www.mylesboisen.com) is a recording and mastering engineer, album producer, film and television composer, journalist, and guitarist/bassist. His resume includes hundreds of studio and live recordings for independent groups and labels, as well as for MTV/Comedy Central, CBS, Warner Bros., Polydor, PBS, etc. In addition to musical performances with Tom Waits, John Zorn, the Rova Saxophone Quartet, Fred Frith, Eugene Chadbourne, Splatter Trio, and the Club Foot Orchestra, Myles has contributed to a number of independent film soundtracks, plus David Lynch's films "Twin Peaks" and "Wild at Heart."

Oakland, CA-based oboist and electronic musician Kyle Bruckmann’s (kylebruckmann.com) work extends from a Western classical foundation into gray areas encompassing free jazz, post-punk and the noise underground. He is a member of sfSound, SFCMP, Splinter Reeds, Eco Ensemble, Stockton Symphony, and Quinteto Latino, and can be heard on more than 80 recordings. Since relocating from Chicago in 2003, he has performed with the San Francisco Symphony and most of the area’s regional orchestras while remaining active within an international community of improvisers and sound artists. Significant collaborative projects he leads or co-founded include Degradient, EKG, Lozenge, and Wrack. He is a professor at University of the Pacific, and also teaches at UC Santa Cruz, Davis, and Berkeley.

Brett Carson (www.brettcarsonmusic.com) is a composer, pianist, improviser, and occasional theater artist based in Oakland CA. His compositional work, which has been described as "fascinatingly intense" (Stephen Smoliar, SF Classical Voice), explores the intersection and juxtaposition of diverse conceptual strata delving into the realms of myth, ritual, and unconscious impulse. Drawing from a plurality of influences, including Sun Ra, Olivier Messiaen, Captain Beefheart, and the literary work of André Breton, Jorge Luis Borges, and J.R.R.Tolkien, he seeks to establish alternative logical systems and cosmologies. In addition to his compositional work, he has performed as a pianist and keyboardist across the US, Europe, and South America in new music, free improvisation, jazz, and rock contexts. He has been the pianist for the Art Ensemble of Chicago since 2019. Additionally, he has played/recorded with a wide variety of other musicians including Bill Baird, Brian Baumbusch, Nicolas Collins, George Lewis, Roscoe Mitchell (solo projects), Bill Noertker, Rent Romus, and William Winant.

Tom Djll (tomdjll.com) spent the years 1981-1993 working with the Serge Modular Music System before enrolling in Mills College Contemporary Music Program, where he extended his quest to develop and integrate an idiosyncratic trumpet language into an electronic sound environment, while also pursuing advanced improvisation studies, formally, with Pauline Oliveros, and, informally, with Jack Wright. While at Mills, Djll concentrated on microtonal composition, split-tone trumpet technique, and computer music. Further refinement of trumpet languages and free improvisation with his band GROSSE ABFAHRT was undertaken from 1999 – 2010, published on the Emanem, Creative Sources, and Setola di Maiale labels. Beginning in 2012, Djll gradually re-introduced electronics into his sound-set. The results are heard in projects like hackMIDI (extreme electro-mechanical piano music), piano + analog electronics in TENDER BUTTONS (with Tania Chen and Gino Robair), delicate environments in EUPHOTIC (with Cheryl Leonard and Bryan Day), austere acoustic spaces with KOKUO (Kanoko Nishi-Smith, John McCowen, Jacob Felix Heule, and Kyle Bruckmann) and ongoing sessions and performances within the lively and ever-evolving Bay Area scene, including: Tim Perkis, Amanda Chaudhary, Jordan Glenn, Clarke Robinson, Suki O’Kane, Matt Ingalls, Tom Nunn, bran(...)pos, and Karen Stackpole.

gabby fluke-mogul (www.flukemogul.com) is an improviser, violinist, composer, & educator. They exist within the threads of improvisation, the jazz continuum, noise, & experimental music. Their playing has been described as embodied & visceral. gabby is humbled to have collaborated with Kyle Bruckmann, Nava Dunkelman, Wendy Eisenberg, Fred Frith, Jordan Glenn, Jacob Felix Heule, Lisa Mezzacappa, Kanoko Nishi-Smith, Pauline Oliveros, Danishta Rivero, & Tom Weeks, among many other musicians, poets, dancers, & visual artists.

Since his emergence on the west coast in the late 1970s, saxophonist/composer Phillip Greenlief (www.phillipgreenlief.com) has achieved international critical acclaim for his recordings and performances with musicians and composers in the post-jazz continuum as well as new music innovators and virtuosic improvisers. He has performed with Wadada Leo Smith, Meredith Monk, Rashaun Mitchell and They Might Be Giants. Albums include LANTSKAP LOGIC with Fred Frith and Evelyn Davis, THAT OVERT DESIRE OF OBJECT with Joelle Leandre, and ALL AT ONCE with FPR (Frank Gratkowski, Jon Raskin, Greenlief). Recent residencies have included the Banff Center for Art and Creativity and Headlands Center for the Arts. His critical writing has been published in Artforum, open space (SFMOMA), and Signal to Noise.

Lisa Mezzacappa (www.lisamezzacappa.com) is a San Francisco Bay Area-based composer, bassist, bandleader, and producer. Called “one of the most imaginative figures on the Bay Area creative jazz scene” by The Mercury News and “a Bay Area treasure” by KQED public radio, she has been an active part of California’s vibrant music community for more than 18 years. Mezzacappa’s activities as a composer and bandleader include ethereal chamber music, electro-acoustic works, avant-garde jazz, music for groups from duo to large ensemble, and collaborations with film, dance and visual art. Recent projects include avantNOIR, a suite for sextet inspired by noir fiction; Organelle, a chamber suite for improvisers grounded in scientific processes on micro and cosmic scales; Glorious Ravage, an evening-length song cycle for large ensemble and films drawn from the writings of Victorian lady adventurers; and Touch Bass, a collaboration with choreographer Risa Jaroslow for three dancers and three bassists. Current projects include a suite for sextet inspired by Italo Calvino’s Cosmicomics stories about the origins of the universe; the new duo B. Experimental Band which performs original compositions for improvisers bimonthly in Oakland, CA; and premiering in 2019, The Electronic Lover, an opera podcast created in collaboration with writer Beth Lisick.

Gino Robair (www.ginorobair.com) has performed and recorded with Tom Waits, Anthony Braxton, John Zorn, Nina Hagen, Terry Riley, Lou Harrison, John Butcher, Derek Bailey, Peter Kowald, Otomo Yoshihide, and the ROVA Saxophone Quartet. He is one of the "25 innovative percussionists" included in the book Percussion Profiles (SoundWorld, 2001), as well as a founding member of the Splatter Trio and Pink Mountain. His opera, I, Norton, based on the life of Norton I, Emperor of the United States, has been performed throughout North America and Europe.
